Swanachild

Swanahild ( Sunnichilde, Sonic Hilde, Serenahilt ), was the second wife of Charles Martel. She was the niece of Pilitrud, the wife of the Bavarian Duke Grimoald, as well as the niece of the Duke Odilo of Bavaria.

Life

From her marriage she had the son Grifo, who was passed over by his half-brothers Carloman and Pippin after the death of his father in his Erbansprüchen.

From a campaign in Bavaria 725, was overthrown in the Grimoald, brought Charles Martel whose marriage Great Beletrude and their niece Sunnichilde as prisoners with the Franks. He married her after the death of his wife Chrotrud; little later their son Grifo was born. Apparently the marriage was with Swanahild (also) an attempt to bind the Bavarian ducal house of the Carolingians.

In 736, Charles received her uncle the Duke Odilo of Bavaria. Overall, a dominant influence Swanahilds is seen in the last years of Charles, who also commented in an attempt to secure her son a legacy. Ultimately not clear, however, is the influence exercised the Swanahild at marriage Odilos with her stepdaughter Hiltrud - sure is only that Hiltruds brothers with the marriage did not agree. On one hand, it is reported that Odilo had during his lifetime married to his flight from the Bavarian nobility opposition to the court of Charles Hiltrud Charles, on the other hand, that they had advised her step- daughter after the death of Charles to flee to her uncle Odilo to Bavaria, the Hiltrud then married.

At his death, 741 Charles Martel left as of Swanahild desired the kingdom of his three sons, Carloman, Pippin and Grifo, with Carloman and Pippin but soon match came (Vieux- Poitiers 742) to ignore the heirship of the much younger Grifo and power among themselves divided up. Swanahild supported her son in his vain attempt to compete with his half-brothers. After Grifos defeat, she was exiled to the abbey of Chelles, where she also died at an unknown date and was buried.

The brotherhood book of Reichenau Abbey are Swanahild the title regina, though you do not state the title of a queen. For this purpose, two positions are discussed in the research
