Sweet Honey in the Rock

Sweet Honey in the Rock is an African-American female a cappella vocal ensemble. The group was formed in 1973 by Bernice Johnson Reagon ( born 1942 ), together with Carol Maillard, Louise Robinson and Mie in Washington DC founded from members of the DC Black Repertory Theater Company. Over the years, the occupation of the choir has changed several times.

The name derives from the 81st Psalm (Ps 81.17 EU). The group stands in the African- American musical tradition. The repertoire draws from the black church music, the chants of the civil rights movement, and songs of the struggle for universal justice. Stylistically, it includes blues, spirituals, traditional gospel hymns, rap, reggae, African chants, Hip Hop, ancient lullabies, and jazz improvisation. Occasionally the singers accompany with percussion instruments.

The group undertakes concert tours in the U.S. and worldwide and has released several albums.
