Świętajno, Szczytno County

Świętajno ( German Schwentainen, 1938-45 Altkirchen ) in the powiat Szczycieński is situated a town in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in Poland, 14 km east of Szczytno. It has about 1,600 inhabitants and is the seat of a rural community.

History

Originally called Schwentainen, the village in Masuria was incorporated on May 15, 1686 by the mayor Kaspar Bieber. It later belonged to the district Ortelsburg. In 1908 a church was founded. Before counting the place for parish small Jerutten. In December 1910 Schwentainen had 1,672 inhabitants.

The place was almost completely destroyed on August 22, 1914 by Russian troops, but afterwards built, among other things, with the support of the warriors Hilfsverein German military from Berlin- Friedenau including a new church and a new school. On July 16, 1938, he was renamed Altkirchen, so that the name sounded German.

Through an administrative reform of the place came in 1975 to the newly formed Province Olsztyn. After the dissolution of the place from 1999 was again part of the Warmia - Mazury.
