Swithun
Swithin of Winchester, also Swithun or Svithun (c. 800 in Hampshire, † July 2 862 in Winchester ) is the name of an English saint of the Roman Catholic Church (July 2 ) and the Anglican Church ( July 15).
Biography
Swithin came from a noble Anglo-Saxon family, and became a Benedictine monk and priest. Under the reign of King Egbert of Wessex, he belonged beside Ealstan of Sherborne to the two reliable members of the Council (Lord High Chancellor ) and helped him in the ecclesiastical affairs. To him, the training ( tutor ) of the later kings Ethelwulf and Alfred the Great was entrusted.
On October 30, he was 852 of Ceolnoth, Archbishop of Canterbury, consecrated Bishop of Winchester. Swithin died on 2 July 862 and was buried according to his own request, in the cemetery of the old Minster ( Cathedral ) at Winchester, where passers-by could come by on his grave and where the sweet rain of heaven might fall on him. Shortly after his death, he was worshiped as a saint.
