Synagogue of El Transito

The Synagogue of El Transito is located in the former Jewish district of the Spanish city of Toledo. It is also known as a synagogue Samuel ha -Levi, after the name of the Treasurer of Peter I of Castile, who had it 1356/57 build. Since 1964 located in the former synagogue, the Sephardic museum, a museum of the history of the Jews in Spain.

History

Of the ten synagogues of the Jewish quarter ( Jewish Quarter ) of the city have been preserved only Santa María la Blanca and El Transito. Peter I allowed her construction of gratitude to the Jews of Toledo for their loyalty and support in the fight against his half-brother Henry of Trastámara. After the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 the Calatravaorden the synagogue was passed, which they converted into a Christian church. The Catholic church is dedicated to St. Benedict. Since 1877, the building is a listed building and in 1964 it became a museum.

Building

The building has a rectangular plan. It has a beautiful Mudejar interior decoration and an elaborate paneled ceiling of cedar. On the side walls runs a frieze with coat of arms of Castile and Hebrew characters. Is the women's gallery with its own entrance on the south wall.
