Synagogue of Trieste

The Synagogue of Trieste ( Tempio Israelitico di Trieste ) is a Jewish house of worship in the northern Italian city of Trieste, Via Gaetano Donizetti and Via San Francesco Assisi in Piazza Giotto. It is amongst the largest and most important Jewish houses of worship in Europe.

Architecture

According to Jewish tradition, the church was built on an east-west axis. The architecture is based on models from Syria. Characteristic are the ornaments in the interior and on the facade, especially the developed of a Star of David rose windows.

History

The Synagogue of Trieste was built in 1908-1912 by the two architects Trieste Ruggero and Arduino Berlam and increasingly substituting the smaller synagogues in the city, which were eventually demolished in the 1920s and 1930s.

1942, the synagogue was closed by the fascist regime. After the end of World War II, the church was re-opened.
