Syðrugøta is at the end of the fjord Gøtuvík on the east coast of the East Island Eysturoy. Syðrugøta has a small sandy beach, which is rare in the Faroe Islands. Here is the Maschinenstrickerei toting where traditional wool products are made.

Together with the neighboring villages Gøtugjógv and Norðragøta it is often just called Gøta. The name Gøta means " street ", especially since always been the main street of Skálafjørður to the north and eastern settlements goes here. The first part of the name indicates that it is the southern two villages. Gøtugjógv is therefore younger than the other two as a settlement. An old legend wants that the parish would have originally been in Syðrugøta, but was then postponed for a crime after Norðragøta. There are still signs that suggest the former location of the church and the cemetery. Originally, the site had two " býlingar " ( districts ), to be precise Nidri við Hús and úti í Grógv, these being but long grown together.

Around 1860 a new settlement was built around, Undir Gøtueiði lying on the commons of Syðrugøta and adjacent to Skálafjørður.

Syðrugøta has a large commons, since the distance between the northernmost tip of the commons and the town is pretty far. A legend wants that the people of Syðrugøta possessed a dwelling with fire place in the northernmost corner, that they might there can stay if they did not managed to get home before dark. A shepherd of the village, the Jákup Dintil was called, could run extremely fast. He stayed one night in this house, when suddenly two sheep thieves got in there and saw him. With speed and skill, he managed to escape the two offenders, after which he ran home and reported the theft.

When stormy winds from the east and southeast is on the coast on heavy surf. Norðragøta has a more convenient location, so the port located in the community property was built there.

On the stamp (see figure) is seen in front of the row of houses beach. Here every summer the G! Festival of the Ex - Clickhaze musician Jón Tyril, which has been very successful. Very many young people find their way there, especially since the festival year after year continues to increase. In the summer of 2005 5.000 guests were present, which represents a tenth of the Faroese population. There were performances by renowned foreign artists such as Europe and Nephew.
