Szymon Marcin Kossakowski

Simon Kossakowski (Polish: Szymon Marcin Kossakowski, lit Simona Kosakovskis, * 1741 in Good Silai at Jonava; . † April 24, 1794 in Vilnius) was a representative of the Polish- Lithuanian noble family Kossakowski, the last Hetman of Lithuania, Lieutenant-General in the service of the tsarist Russia, supporters of the bar Confederation and the Confederation of Targowica.

Life

Simon Kossakowski was educated at the Jesuit College of Kaunas. He then studied at the University of Königsberg.

1762 Kossakowski began his ministry at Prince of Courland, Karl of Saxony, in Jelgava, in whose service he fought against the Russian troops. During the Sejm of Repnine 1767/68, he criticized the king sharply because of its pro-Russian attitude and centralist aspirations. As a result, he was a member of Sejmdelegation that Catherine II should ask for a guarantee of the preservation of Poland. In 1768 he participated in the anti-Russian movement Bar Confederation and organized groups fight for the uprising in Lithuania.

After the failed independence movement Kossakowski oriented to Russia. In 1790 he was a volunteer in the Russian army and took part in the 6th Russian-Turkish war. For his achievements he was during the war to major general, then promoted to lieutenant general.

Kossakowski was an opponent of the Constitution of May 3, 1791 and helped the tsarist government in the organization of the Confederacy Targowica 1792. Moreover, he supported the Russian policy after the Polish-Lithuanian uprising in 1794.

On April 24, 1794, he was hanged by the rebels as traitors Lithuania on the town hall square in Vilnius. He was buried in the mausoleum of the Church of the Holy Apostle James in Jonava.
