T2-Tanker

The tanker type T2, or simply T-2 tanker, was a series - type cargo ship, which was built during the Second World War at various shipyards in the United States.

History

The type of ship was built from 1939 to 1945 in 525 units and four finishes. The T2 was considered one of the best merchant ship designs of the time. Many of these ships remained even after the Second World War, some with a new midships section and new drive system, still used for many years. The Esso Manchester, ex Santiago, Type T2 -SE - A1 of the Sun Shipbuilding and Drydock Company in Chester, Pennsylvania, with the built in 1944 remained virtually unchanged until being scrapped in 1963 in driving. Especially in the first years of containerisation a greater number of T2 tankers was converted to container ships. Compared with conversions from other types of ships, the T2 - transformations mark this out as the most suitable.

T2 - base design

Basis of the T2 standard Tankers were the two tanker built in 1939 and Mobilfuel Mobillube. The two built by the shipyard Bethlehem - Sparrows Point Shipyard in Maryland ships were driven by a steam turbine 12,000 hp, acting on a single propeller. Six other ships of this type emerged from the shipyard as civil constructions, but were taken after the attack on Pearl Harbor by the United States Navy.

T2 -A- Draft

The T2 -A tanker type was slightly larger and faster than the basic design.

T2 -SE -A1

The most numerous built by far was the T2 - type T2 -SE -A1 tanker, which was created as a civil design of the shipyard Sun Shipbuilding Company for Standard Oil Company of New Jersey from 1940. For them, a turbo -electric drive with 6000 shaft horsepower and a maximum power of 7240 hp was used, which allowed a speed of 15 knots. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States Maritime Commission ordered the construction of this ship type in large numbers to ensure a supply of U.S. warships. There were 481 ships of this type of the shipyards in Alabama Drydock and Shipbuilding Company in Mobile ( Alabama), the Swan Iceland Shipyard Kaiser Company in Portland ( Oregon), Marinship Corp.. in Sausalito, California and the Sun Shipbuilding built in Chester ( Pennsylvania).

T2 -A2 SE

The T2 -SE -A2 version was built exclusively by the yard Marinship in Sausalito and was almost identical to the T2 -SE -A1 version. The main difference was in the more powerful engine with 10,000 instead of 7,240 hp.

T2 -A3 SE

The T2 -SE -A3 version was also built exclusively by the yard Marinship in Sausalito and was structurally identical to the variant T2 -SE -A2 substantially. The peculiarity of this version was the equipment as a naval tanker of the U.S. Navy.
