Tahar Ben Jelloun

Tahar Ben Jelloun ( born December 1, 1944 in Fes ) is a Moroccan francophone writer and psychotherapist and is considered the most significant representative of the French literature from the Maghreb.

Life

After visiting an Arab- Francophone elementary school Tahar Ben Jelloun moved as a 18 -year-old from his birthplace Fez to Tangier to visit there a French School ( Lycée ). In 1963 he began studying philosophy at the University of Mohammed V in Rabat, where he composed his first poems, which have appeared in the anthology Hommes sous linceul de silence 1971. After completing his studies he taught philosophy in Morocco, but had to emigrate to France in 1971, as the teaching of philosophy was Arabized and he was not trained for it. He was there received his doctorate in 1975 in social psychiatry, of which his works were influenced (eg La reclusion solitaire, 1976). From 1972, he wrote regularly for Le Monde.

In the following years, Ben Jelloun published numerous novels, including 1985 L'Enfant de sable, by which he was known. La Nuit Sacrée, the sequel to Enfant de sable was in 1987 awarded the Prix Goncourt. So Ben Jelloun was the first native of North Africa author who received this award.

In 1994 he was awarded the Grand Prix littéraire du Maghreb, which he finally asserted itself as a French author.

In June 2004, Ben Jelloun was awarded with prize money of 100,000 euros Irish Literature Prize for his book IMPAC Cette aveuglante absence de lumière ( German: "The Silence of Light" ), in which he states in the - describes Tazmamart prison camp - now closed. The novel is based on a true story.

Jelloun's works have been translated into numerous languages ​​, such as L' enfant de sable and La Nuit sacrée in 43 languages ​​or Le Racisme explique à ma fille in 25 languages, including Esperanto. His novel Les Raisins de la galère was also assumed in NRW and Lower Saxony for the Central High School in 2008 and 2009 in French.

Tahar Ben Jelloun lives with his wife and daughter Mérième, for which he has written several educational books, in Paris. In Le Racisme explique à ma fille ( German: " Daddy, what's a stranger " ) of 1997, he declared his daughter - and all other interested parties - empathetic, yet practical, why racism is created and how you can counteract this. 2011 Tahar Ben Jelloun wrote the work Arab Spring, in which he grappled with the protests in the Arab world, for which he was awarded in the same year with the Erich Maria Remarque Peace Prize of the city of Osnabrück.
