Tainui

Tainui is a tribal union ( Māori: Waka; literally: boat, canoe ) of four Māori iwi. The confederation comprises four major, related iwi in the center of the North Island of New Zealand: Hauraki, Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāti Raukawa and Waikato - Tainui.

These iwi share the common ancestry of the Polynesian migrants who reached New Zealand with the mythical canoe Tainui. This is said to have crossed about 800 years ago the Pacific from Hawaiki to Aotearoa New Zealand.

Representatives of the iwi in the New Zealand Parliament is Nanaia Mahuta.
