The Municipal Museum of Art Taipei ( SKT; Chinese台北市 立 美术馆, Pinyin Shili Taibei Měishùguǎn; . Engl Taipei Fine Arts Museum ( TFAM ) ) is an art museum in Taipei, Taiwan. It was opened ( dissolved USTDC 1979) on December 24, 1983, at the building of the former United States Taiwan Defense Command.

It was the first museum in Taiwan which has been designed specifically for contemporary art exhibitions. The architectural style is a local adaptation of the Japanese List Metabo movement.

History

From 1984 to 1990, the most prestigious Biennale " trends of modern art in the ROC " (Republic of China) has been demonstrated, promoted the Chinese modern art and artists in particular with a pass of the ROC or an equivalent origin invited. This leading, national competition -style exhibition was replaced in 1992 by the Taipei Biennial and the Taipei Prize. The Taipei Biennial introduced the idea of inviting curator critical, older and more experienced artists, while the Taipei Prize continues to serve as a platform for the discovery of young and unknown artists.

Since its opening was the mission of the SKT to promote Chinese contemporary art and international exchange. Since the early years, numerous international exhibitions, which are often sponsored by foreign cultural institutions such as the British Institute or the Goethe Institute.

The first exhibition abroad by the SKT was held entitled " Message from Taipei" in 1989 in Japan. One of the most well-known of these national exhibitions abroad took place in 1996/1997 in Aachen at the Museum Ludwig and in Berlin at the House of World Cultures, under the title "Taiwan: Kunst Heute " instead.

Since the mid- nineties, the SKT changed its mission to promote a Taiwanese identity in contemporary art. Most clearly came through the organization of a Taiwan pavilion at the Venice Biennial and the Taipei Biennial expressed. The pavilion was dedicated to the issue of Taiwanese identity. In 1996, the largest ever Taipei Biennial was "The Search for Identity" realized under the title, were exhibited at the 110 artists on all floors of the building.

Since 1995, the SKT organized the Taiwan Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, which was recognized as a national pavilion from 1995 to 2000. As of 1997, the People's Republic of China exerted diplomatic pressure and lodged a complaint against the use of the name "Republic of China ", and in 2001 the Taiwan Pavilion in Venice was placed on the list of institutional holdings and later released into the category of security events.

Since 2000, the Taichung National Museum of Arts organizes a participation at the Biennale of Architecture in Venice. While the SKT would like to represent " Taiwan", was the Taichung National Museum of Art on the use of the name " ROC " (Republic of China), which meant the diplomatic deathblow for a Taiwanese pavilion.

However, the loss of an official representation inspired other museums in Taiwan to organize exhibitions at the Biennale in Venice. In 2007, the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, and in 2009 the MoCA Taipei.

Since 1998, the Taipei Biennial has become an international event, curated by an international star curator.

The first experiment of an Asian internationalization was led by Fumio Nanjo 1998 under the title " Site of Desire ". Since 2000 the international curator is invited to select a local co-curator, which then selects five to six local artists to participate in Taiwan's most prestigious art event.

After 2000 waned funding and institutional support for the Taipei Biennial. Compared to other Asian Biennials led the privately funded exhibitions of SKT to regular criticism from the local art scene.

The SKT has a rather interesting institutional history of interaction with the local art scene. In 1986, had the first director, Su Rui - Ping, to resign after they destroyed the installation by the artist Zhang Jianfu in an " experimental " exhibition with their own feet and 1985 a red metal sculpture called " Unlimited Minimalism " of Li Zai Qian in silver was repainted.

In the interests of justice late in 2006 a red sculpture called " Homerun " permanently installed on the square in front of the main entrance. 1988, the performance artist Lee Mingsheng was beaten up by museum guards when she brought a glass with feces to a public debate during the exhibition " World of Dada " call. In the same exhibition Marcel Duchamp's famous urinal " the fountain " was shown. Lee was invited in 1993 as the first Taiwanese artist to the Venice Biennale.

In 1995, the newly appointed director Chang Chen- Yu was forced to resign after a month- long protest of the art scene took place, which was directed against his style of leadership and financing policy of the museum.

With the turn of the millennium and the increasing professionalization of the art scene, the close relationship between the museum and the local art scene had changed fundamentally at the Taipei Biennial 2004, the Introduction by the local curator has been completely deleted from the official catalog and that without greater public impact or reactions.

In the old government buildings in the Taipei City opened, in 2001, the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei ( Taipei MZK or MoCA Taipei台北 当代 艺术馆) was.

The museum is accessible by the Taipei Metro and is in close proximity to the east of Yu'anshan station.
