Takis Ikonomopoulos

Panagiotis Ikonomopoulos (Greek Παναγιώτης Οικονομόπουλος, * October 19, 1943 ) is a former Greek football player.

Playing career

Panagiotis Ikonomopoulos, who is considered by the majority of experts as the best goalkeeper in the history of Greece began with the playing football in the Athens suburb of Kallithea Kallithea FC in 1958, where he signed a contract. After just one season Ikonomopoulos moved in 1959 to Apollon Athens with whom he not managed to win thanks to his achievements, the unbeaten Greek championship of juniors and thereby suffered a total of just two goals. In 1960 Ikonomopoulos to Proodeftiki before he finally 1963 at Panathinaikos Athens signed a treaty. With Panathinaikos players took advantage straight away the chances that gave him the then coach of the club Stefan Bobek and played in the basic formation. In the following years Ikonomopoulos won five Greek Championships ( 1964, 1965, 1969, 1970, 1972) and two cups (1967, 1969). The highlight of his career was 1971, the participation in the final of the European Champions' Cup when, in London's Wembley Stadium was defeated with 0-2 Ajax Amsterdam. Ikonomopoulos was one of the main pillars of his club and was on the way to the final, especially against Everton world-class performances and played in the circle of Europe's best goalkeeper at the time. 1977, and at the age of 34 years, Ikonomopoulos moved to Patras for resident club Panachaiki before it two years later at Apollon Athens ended his career. Overall Ikonomopoulos played 18 years in the highest Greek football league and brought it to a total of 398 missions. It is noteworthy be imputed record set in 1965 when he remained without conceding a goal for 1088 minutes at Panathinaikos.

During his career Ikonomopoulos was active for which he completed a total of 25 caps for the Greek national team.

Coaching career

After his active career as a player he worked until 2005 as a goalkeeping coach at Panathinaikos, where he discovered among other things, the eventual champions, and Konstantinos Antonios Nikopolidis Khalkias and promoted. In 2002, he took over for the last four games of the season the role of chief coach of Panathinaikos after the Uruguayan Sergio Markarian a Spielsprerre of 40 days had been imposed before.
