Talat Chaiya ( Thai ตลาด ไชยา ) is a small town ( thesaban tambon) in the province of Surat Thani. It is located approximately at the site of the old Müang Chaiya, one of the oldest and most historic places in Southern Thailand. Chaiya is also the capital of the district ( Amphoe ) Chaiya.

History

Chaiya is one of the oldest cities in Thailand. Because of the name (" Chai -ya " to have originated from Sri - vi -ja- ya) assume some historians that it was a question of the temporary capital of the kingdom of Srivijaya, the south of the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra of 7 dominated until the 13th century. From that epoch here were numerous perfectly shaped Buddha statues which are now on display at the National Museum Chaiya. Other statues are located in the National Museum Bangkok.

Attractions

Immediately west of the border of Talat Chaiya the important Buddhist temple of Wat Chaiya Borommathat is from the 8th century. The central chedi was built with bricks and mortar made of plant fibers. The system was restored quite expensive in the 1990s. Since 1949, this is also the final resting place for the monk Phra Chaiya Wiwat, who is revered nationwide high. Next to it is the National Museum Chaiya.

About six kilometers southwest of the city, the building founded by Buddhadasa Bhikkhu Buddhist Meditation Center Wat Suan Mokkh.
