Tambacounda is a city in central Senegal with about 78 800 inhabitants (estimated 2007). It is the capital of Tambacounda region.

Location

It is located north of the River Gambia and thus east of the state of the same name. After Mali in the east is about 180 km. Due to the city is the only railway communication ( railway line Dakar - Niger) of Senegal, which leads from the capital Dakar to Bamako (Mali). After Dakar, there are 467 kilometers to the west. Furthermore, the city has a continental airport.

South of the city of Niokolo -Koba National Park is located.

History

Originally the site was a camp of the Mandinka and part of the Kingdom Bondu. Within the city there are still some traces of the colonial period. For 2003, the railway station, the Hotel de la Gare and the building of the prefecture were registered on the list of historic monuments. Tambacounda is the seat of the Diocese of Tambacounda.
