Tandel

Tandel is a municipality in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, in the canton of Vianden. The municipality was created on 1 January 2006 by the merger of the municipalities Bastendorf and Fouhren.

Attractions

Worth mentioning is the ruins of the castle in Brandenburg, which towers over the village. According to archaeological findings stood on this site in the 7th to 9th century a wooden building. The castle was built in the 10th century, which burned bits of wood occupy from this time and provides an explanation for the castle name. In the following centuries the castle was enlarged several times. In 1413 the lords capitulate after a siege by the Duke Antoine de Bourgogne. In 1500, the castle is then expanded by more than an artillery tower and barbican. Since 1751 it belongs to the family you Fays, the last residents moved out of the castle in 1815 and since then it expires. When Victor Hugo in 1865 for the first time she visited, she was already a ruin. Since 1997 the castle for 49 years is leased to the State of Luxembourg, but enjoys it no higher priority. Although place at the castle a variety of restoration work place, but her condition is still too poor to make it accessible to the public.

The ruins served as a filming location for the 2000 film Shadow of the Vampire with John Malkovich and Willem Dafoe and 2003 for the film George and the Dragon with Patrick Swayze.
