Tanque Verde is a census -designated place near Tucson in Pima County in the U.S. state of Arizona. The city has an area of 85.1 km ², and had in the census in 2000, 16,195 inhabitants. The population density is 190.2 per km ². Tanque Verde is Spanish for green container.

History

Tanque Verde was once a farming village. The name comes from the algae that occurred in a body of water in the city. The first inhabitants of the area but were the Apaches. Founded in 1886 to the School District Tanque Verde.

Demography

Data obtained from the census in 2000 16.195 inhabitants of Tanque Verde living in 5,810 households; among them were 4,903 families. The population density was 190 per km ². In place 6,056 residential units were recorded. Among the population was 94.3 % White, 0.7 % African American, 0.6 % American Indian, 1.3 % Asian and 1.5% of other ethnic groups; 1.7 % reported belonging to several ethnic groups.

Among the 5,810 households 35.2 % had children under the age of 18; 12.2% were single-person households. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size 3.01.

The population was spread out with 25.3% under the age of 18, 4.9 % from 18 to 24, 22.7 % 25-44 years, 35.1% from 45 to 64 years and 12.0 % of 65 years or older. The median age was 44 years.

The median household income was $ 80,530, the median family income $ 84,228. The per capita income in Tanque Verde was $ 36,467. Under the poverty line lived 1.5 % of families and 2.4 % of the population.
