Târgu Frumos

Târgu Frumos (Hungarian Szépvásár, German as " Beautiful market ") is a small town in Iaşi county in the west of Moldova in Romania.

Location

Târgu Frumos located in the southwest of Moldova level ( Câmpia Moldovei ). The district capital Iaşi is located approximately 45 km east of Targu Frumos away.

History

The site was probably founded between the years 1433 and 1444 as a marketplace. The first written reference 1448th end of the 15th century, the city was a temporary residence of Ştefan cel Mare, Prince of Moldavia. The development of the settlement was favored by the location on trade routes towards Iaşi, Paşcani, Botosani and Bacau. The Turks invaded in 1512 and invasions of Polish troops at the end of the 17th century ended the rise of the city. From the second half of the 18th century, the importance of the city rose again as a trading center. In 1870 the railway line from Iasi to Paşcani that runs through Târgu Frumos, put into service; some smaller industrial companies moved into the area. In April and May 1944, the outskirts of the city was the scene of heavy fighting between the Red Army and the German Wehrmacht. After 1945, some textile and food businesses were settled in the city. Furthermore, today play the agriculture and tourism play a role.

Population

1900 were registered in Târgu Frumos 4,654 inhabitants. As of the 2002 census, lived in the town of 13,573 people, including 11,461 Romanians, 1,159 Russians and Lipovans and 917 Roma.

Traffic

On the railway line from Iasi to Paşcani Târgu Frumos has a station at which including high-speed trains. Through the city runs the European Route 58 there are regular buses to Iasi and in the community Balş.
