Târgu Neamț

Târgu Neamţ (Hungarian Németvásár, German outdated Niamtz ) is a town in Neamţ county in the west of Moldova in Romania.

Location

Târgu Neamţ lies on the eastern edge of the Stanisoara Mountains, which is part of the Eastern Carpathians. Flowing through the city of Neamţ (also Ozana ). The Piatra Neamţ county town is located about 30 km south of Târgu Neamţ away.

History

The territory of the present-day city was inhabited already in the Neolithic, the Bronze Age and the time of the Dacians. Târgu Neamţ was first documented in 1387-1392. Whether it's in the city is a founding German settlers, as the name suggests (Romanian Neamţ = " German " ), is controversial among Romanian historians.

Târgu Neamţ was one of the oldest towns in the Principality of Moldavia. An important role for the city played the nearby Castle Neamţ, which existed since the 14th century and was expanded under Ştefan cel Mare.

In the 17th and 18th centuries it came with the fall of the Principality of Moldavia under Ottoman suzerainty and also to stagnation in the development of the city. In the 19th century, many Jews emigrated from Transylvania; Târgu Neamţ experienced a new boom, which continued until the Second World War. During the communist era, large farms were settled in the city, so that the population grew slower compared to other cities.

Population

At the first census in 1772 145 houses were registered in Târgu Neamţ, in 1835 there were 519 families. 1915, 9,115 residents recorded; the highlight of the population was reached in 1997 with 22,700. As of the 2002 census were registered in the city of 20 496 inhabitants, of whom 20 152 Romanians, 12 Hungarians, 302 Roma, 12 Jews and 2 German.

Traffic

Târgu Neamţ is the terminus of a railway line, which was put into operation in 1986 and leads from the railway junction Paşcani. In this city several times a day commuter trains. Regular bus services and more for Piatra Neamt and Iasi.

Târgu Neamţ is located on the National Road 15B and 15C. According to current planning (2008) is an A4 highway, which will connect Iaşi with the northwest of the country, through Târgu Neamţ.
