Tartane

Tartane was one of the most common types of sailing ships in the Mediterranean and also in Arabia. The term tartane is taken from the Arabic-speaking world by the Italians, meaning small boat. The type of ship was used from the 17th to the late 19th century for the transportation of cargo and for fishing. Tartanes also served in the war fleets of the Mediterranean and as a privateer.

It initially wore two masts, later only one mast. Relative to the length has a large width. It shows great similarity to Xebec with its far outstretched the forecastle with the rammspornartigen bowsprit. At the stern of the free overbuilt tail falls on. Tartans are smaller than Polacker. Great similarities exist with the Pink (ship type), but which has a transom stern, and the Barca of the Mediterranean.
