Tartronic acid ( hydroxymalonic acid ), hydroxydicarboxylic acid is the simplest. It does not happen because of their sensitivity to oxidation and thermal instability in nature.

It can be produced on a laboratory scale by the hydrolysis of bromomalonic with silver hydroxide. Acetobacter acetosum forms in a glucose medium 2 - ketogluconic acid, which is reduced in a subsequent reaction to tartronic acid.

It crystallizes as colorless prisms, melting at 158-160 ° C with decomposition ( decarboxylation to glycolic acid ). It can be oxidized to the mesoxalic acid by catalytic oxidation of platinum -bismuth catalysts with air.
