Task Force Baum

The tank raid to Hammelburg was a member of the U.S. Army for the Liberation of Allied soldiers from the prison camp of the training area mutton castle at the end of the Second World War.

The company was conducted by the Task Force Baum, an end of March 1945 formed, mysterious and controversial special unit of the U.S. General George S. Patton. Their commander was Captain Abraham Baum. The unit should advance from Aschaffenburg 80 km behind the German lines and relieve the Allied prisoners of war in the camp Oflag XIII- B near Hammelburg. The company ended in a fiasco. In the village Höllrich at Karsbach the dressing was included and almost completely destroyed. The U.S. army lost 57 tanks and several vehicles and about 300 soldiers. Only seven men were able to fight back through the front line.
