Tavastia (historical province)

Häme [ hæmɛ ] ( swedish Tavastland, lat Tavastia, dt outdated Tawastland ) is a historical region in Central Finland. To Häme include today's landscapes Kanta -Häme, Päijät -Häme, Central Finland and the eastern part of Pirkanmaa. Until 1997 there was a province of Häme. This included Kanta -Häme, the largest part of Pirkanmaa and the western part of Päijät -Häme. In the province reform of 1997, the province was divided Häme in the provinces of Southern Finland and Western Finland. In Swedish, this was called Tavastland province, according to the Swedish name of their capital Hämeenlinna.

Häme came through the second Swedish Crusade in 1239 under Swedish rule. End of the 13th century Birger Jarl founded the Häme Castle in Hämeenlinna. When the Swedish border was moved by the Treaty of Nöteborg 1323 to the east, the castle lost importance, but the city remained the center of the Häme region.
