Taymyr Island

The Taimyr Island (Russian Таймыр ) is a 350- km ² island in the Kara Sea in the Asian part of Russia.

Geography

The island is in front of the Taimyr peninsula of the same name, from which it is separated by only half a mile wide at its narrowest point Taimyr road. The road, as well as the west subsequent Pallander road, mostly covered by pack ice. East of the island extends Taimyrgolf, north it is separated by the Matissenstraße from Nordenskiöld Archipelago. In the west and north Taimyr are offshore pilot Machotkin Island, the pilot Alexeyev Island, the Moiseyev Island and other smaller islands. Some of the Taimyr Island and the surrounding islands are also allocated to the Nordenskiöld Archipelago as a sixth group of islands.

The Taimyr Island is about 37 km long and 18.5 km wide in east-west direction. The highest point is the 235 meter high mountain Negri. The coast is highly structured.

The island is uninhabited today.

Geology

The island consists of sandstone and shale, which are covered by Quaternary deposits.

The Taimyr island is covered by tundra vegetation.

History

Discovered and named the island was during the Erstdurchfahrung the Northeast Passage by Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld in 1878 with the Auxiliarsegler Vega. On the southwest coast of the island Nordenskiöld made ​​a four -meter-high wooden pole on a foundling, who was re- discovered during the mapping of the island in 1971.
