TeamLab

TeamLab Office ( until October 2012 only TeamLab ) [ ti: mlæb ] is an open- source platform for project management. TeamLab is written with ASP.NET and licensed under GNU GPL version 3. The platform has been developed by the resident in Latvia IT companies Ascensio System SIA.

History

In March 2011, the company released the new improved version 3.0, which contained a fourth module - documents ( developed for storing, editing, sharing and collaboration on the documents directly on the portal).

As of October 2011 Project management, collaboration and document management modules were available on Android or iOS mobile devices. A month later, two more modules have been introduced, namely, calendar and CRM.

Online application solutions

The software is offered in three forms:

  • Software as a Service (SaaS ): The advantages of the SaaS version are that the acquisition of own server, spending on outsourcing services and support can be excluded from the budget of the company. In addition, SaaS offers the latest version of the software that can automatically download from the server. The SaaS version is intended for organizations that are interested in a ready service. This allows the enterprise portal to be launched soon and it is updated regularly by Ascensio System SIA and hosted on Amazon.
  • Amazon Machine Image (AMI ): Thanks to the Amazon web Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud ( EC2 ), it is possible to accommodate the TeamLab platform on its own virtual server. This increases the flexibility and control over computing resources can be obtained. In addition, this solution two problems are solved: the Amazon servers are functioning properly and provide a high-quality protection against hacker attacks.
  • Open Source: The TeamLab source code is listed on SourceForge and available for anyone who wants to download it and install on your own server. Each developer can modify and improve the source code.

Automation

In addition to the standard functions, automatic creation and sending of reports on the work carried out has been integrated. Various report templates as well as the filter setting for sending the reports to analyze the work of the project team and catch up residues, which is a good control tool in project management.

Virtualization

In the realization of the module virtualization technology has been applied. As a basis for a text-editing program, the open source software OpenOffice.org served. This technology enables you to work with documents in the web browser, download and install on the hard drive of a computer without additional software.

Criticism

  • Currently (as of 2011 ) works TeamLab platform only under the Windows operating systems, and versions for Linux and portable devices are now being developed.
  • TeamLab does not meet the requirements of large companies, because there is still no functionality for cost accounting.
