Teatro Municipal (Rio de Janeiro)

The Teatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro (German Municipal Theatre ) is a theater and opera house in Rio de Janeiro. It is considered one of the finest and most important opera houses in Brazil. The impressive building is located at Praça Floriano in the district Cinelândia in the center of Rio.

History

The construction of the Teatro Municipal began in 1905 under the leadership of Francisco de Oliveira Passos, which was inspired by the magnificent building of the Paris Opéra Garnier. On 14 July 1909, the theater was completed with an initial 1,739 seats and inaugurated by President Nilo Peçanha. The Teatro was repeatedly modified and renovated and now has 2,361 spectator seats. On the program are regularly ballet performances and productions of well-known operas.

Before the centenary of the theater was particularly complex with a total cost of approximately R $ 64 million ( equivalent to approximately 25.8 million euros ) restored. The gilding of the facade and the dome was restored. Inside the theater, the candlesticks were restored. The official reopening took place in the presence of the President on May 27, 2010.
