Teatro Nacional de El Salvador

The Teatro Nacional de San Salvador located in the historic center of the capital of El Salvador.

History

The current building replaced the old National Theater in San Salvador, which was destroyed by fire in February 1910.

Through an international architecture contest, which was sponsored by the Salvadoran State, the French architect Daniel Beylard end of 1910, was awarded the contract to build the theater. The following year, on November 3, 1911, the reconstruction of the Teatro Nacional started. Six years later, it was reopened.

The property is located at the Plaza Francisco Morazán. The building was built in the French Renaissance style with details of Rococo, Romanticism and Art Nouveau. The 650 seats are distributed on three levels and is located in the second level balcony-like presidential box ( Presidential Palco ). The elliptical dome with an exceptional crystal chandelier was designed by local artists. Other prominent areas of the chamber hall and foyer in the style of the French Folies Bergère.

In the years 1975 and 1976 renovations were made. In 1979 the building was declared a National Monument and entered in the list of National Monument.

By the 2001 earthquake, the theater was badly damaged. The elaborate construction and restoration began in 2003 and lasted until mid-2008. On 29 September of the same year the National Theatre of President Antonio Saca González was reopened.
