Ted Strehlow

Theodore George Henry Strehlow ( born June 6, 1908 in Hermannsburg; † 3 October 1978) was an Australian anthropologist. He continued the work of his father, Carl Strehlow.

Life

Strehlow learned from an early age to know the culture of Aranda. The children of the tribe were his playmates. He therefore spoke their language. In Adelaide, he studied English. 1933 were the tribal elders approach with a request to Strehlow, write down their myths, stories and songs and to continue his father's work. From 1936 to 1942 he worked as a guard officer, which earned him criticism of farmers and settlers, but the confidence of the Aranda reinforced. 1942 Strehlow was drafted into the Australian Army and participated in the Second World War in the Pacific. He then returned to Hermannsburg and continued his research. The collection of his photographs, artifacts, studies and work have been deposited in the " Strehlow Research Centre " in Alice Springs, where they can be viewed.
