Tehran City Theater

The Shahr Theatre is a theater located in the center of Tehran, whose construction was given 1967 (1347) of Schahbanu Farah Pahlavi in order. The person in charge of the construction architect Ali Sardar Afkhami, one of the architects of the "New Iranian school", a building created the both Greek and Roman elements, traditional Persian elements like the pillars of Persepolis, as well as modern integrated element. The roof structure consists of a dome, which picks up the style elements from the time of the Ilkhanate.

The building is designed as a round building, which is modeled after the Greek and Roman Theater. The interior consists of five halls. The main auditorium has 579 seats, a smaller hall ( Charsu ) capacity for 120 people. The hall Talar -e Sayeh holds 100 people, the other two rooms less than 100 people.

The theater was opened with the play The Cherry Orchard by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, directed by Arie Avanesian in the presence of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and Farah Pahlavi Schahbanu on 27 January 1973 ( 7 Bahman 1351 under Iranian calendar).

The performances of Shahr- theater were first organized by the Office of the Shiraz Art Festival and later from the National Iranian Television ( NITV ). The theater is home to the only professional theater in Iran.

The building is endangered in its existence. Due to the works of a religious cultural complex on the south side of the theater, the building has been given a crack. According to the mayor of Tehran is to be built next to the theater a mosque. On the north side are construction of the Tehran Metro in progress.
