Tehri Garhwal district

Tehri Garhwal was one of the princely states of British India at the foot of the Himalayas in what is now the state of Uttarakhand. The Hindu Garhwal principality existed since 823. 1791 it became a protectorate of Nepal and in 1804 annexed by the Nepalese. The displaced Raja Sudarshan Shah gained the help of the British in 1812 and 1815 was used as the ruler of Tehri Garhwal. Raja Narendra Shah ( 1913-46 ) was raised to the Maharaja. Tehri Garhwal was until 1947 a British protectorate and was initially under the supervision of the Governor of North - Western Provinces and United and came in 1936 to the Punjab States Agency.

The country had in 1941 an area of ​​11,655 km ² and 540,000 inhabitants. The Maharaja Manabendra Shah joined in May 1949 the Punjab Hill States, and took place on 1 August 1949 following India ( see History of India), with Tehri Garhwal was the state of Uttar Pradesh incorporated as a district. On November 1, 1956, the princely state was abolished. Since 2000, the area belongs to the new state of Uttarakhand. Manabendra Shah went into politics and was for many years a deputy in the Parliament of India, 1980-83 Ambassador to Ireland.
