Description

Vegetative characteristics

The Wrong mandrake root grows as a perennial herbaceous plant, reaching heights of growth from 40 to 90 cm. It constitutes neither rhizomes or stolons. The bulbous thickened underground part of the stem has scale leaves. The glandular hairy stem has two or three alternating constant, relatively large leaves. The leaves are divided into petiole and leaf blade. The petioles are 3-30 cm long, with basal leaves are the longest, the upper ones are amplexicaul. The 3.5 to 10 cm long leaf blade is roundish heart-shaped, three to neunlappig. The membranous, green stipules are about 5 mm long.

Generative features

In a stretched, 40 to 90 cm long, racemose inflorescence are 14 to 30 flowers and bracts together. The inconspicuous flowers are hermaphroditic and fünfzählig with double perianth. The green flower cup ( hypanthium ) is grown up to half of the ovary; The free region is 2 to 3 mm long. Five sepals are upright, greenish and 1-3 mm long. The five greenish-white or cream to pink petals are fringed slashed and 3-7 mm long. The original home is located in British Columbia, Alaska, California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. Tellima grandiflora thrives in moist woods, thickets, meadows, rocky slopes, often near streams at altitudes 0-2000 meters.

The Wrong mandrake root is locally naturalized in Europe as an ornamental plant and feral grows on roadsides and ruderal influenced shady source points, eg very rare in the Thuringian Forest.

David Douglas presented this way in 1828 as Tellima grandiflora in John Lindley: Botanical Register; Consisting of colored ..., Volume 14, 1178 panel in the genus Tellima. The genus Tellima 1823, pp. 765-766 erected by Robert Brown in Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea. Another synonym is Tellima odorata Howell.

Tellima is an anagram of the original genus name Mitella. The specific epithet grandiflora means big.
