Temple of Divine Providence

The Temple of Divine Providence (Polish Świątynia Opatrzności Bożej ) is a Catholic church and a national sanctuary, which is currently being built in Warsaw's Wilanów. The memorial is dedicated to you for the freedom and sovereignty of Poland. History

On 5 May 1791, the Parliament of the Kingdom of Poland decided to build the Temple of Divine Providence, as a vote for the Beschließung of the Polish constitution on May 3 Originally the building was conceived as a secular temple of the Upper Providence, according to the ideas of the Enlightenment. Because of the partition of Poland by Prussia, Russia and Austria, came the construction according to the project of architect Jakub Kubicki not materialize. Only a fragment at the site of today's botanical garden in the Ujazdów Avenue was built.

After the re-establishment of the Polish state after the First World War in 1930, a competition was announced on the project of the temple. It was won by the architect Bohdan Pniewski. The Temple was scheduled on Mokotów Field (Pole Mokotowskie ). Due to the outbreak of war, it remained in the project.

After the 1989 turn of the Sejm decision of 1791 was renewed on 23 October 1998. It was the terrain in the middle of the new residential area, Wilanów, close to the planned East-West highway junction elected. It was announced an architectural competition, the Warsaw architect Professor Marek Budzyński won. He proposed the construction of an underground temple in the form of a mound, topped with a star-shaped dome light. The project was evaluated by the professionals is very high, but met with the disapproval of conservative creditors who had desired a conventional church building.

Nevertheless decided initially the head of the Church in Poland, Cardinal Józef Glemp to build the church after the award-winning design. After some time he unexpectedly changed his mind, and to build the church, the architects Wojciech and Lech Szymborski were ordered.

The Szymborski design is a cube-shaped building made ​​of reinforced concrete with a high dome. It soon earned the nickname " Lemon Squeezer ". On 2 May 2002 the foundation stone was walled solemnly. Construction began on 25 February 2003. Should be funded from the donations of the faithful, but as they were not sufficient, the Treasury was to help pulled on the grounds that if it were to finance a National Shrine ( the Pantheon in the lower church ) and a secular pope Museum (upstairs under the dome ).

In 2009, the church was in its raw state, even without a dome. Completion is expected in 2015.
