Tenganan

Tenganan is a mountain village on the island of Bali with a population of the people of Bali Aga, about three kilometers from Candi Dasa. It is one of the few villages of Bali, where the pre- Hindu culture is still alive.

The Bali Aga describe themselves as descendants of the original inhabitants of Bali. They managed to preserve through strict foreclosure over the centuries their cultural and religious traditions.

The tradition ( adat ) provides inter alia that only authorized to remain living in the village and live among villagers who choose their spouse. Those who are outside the community looking for a woman or a man, his life outside the borders must build and then only comes on a visit to the village.

The wealthy Tengananer themselves do not work physically, but let the work in the rice fields of Balinese people from the surrounding villages, against a portion of the yield of crops, do.

This leaves the Bali Aga time and leisure to cultivate traditions and to devote himself to art and crafts. Known worldwide and highly appreciated by collectors are manufactured in the complicated process of double ikat Low Sing- substances from Tenganan.

This Handwebverfahren came before our era with the Dong Son culture to Indonesia, and is today maintained only in the Bali Aga village of Tenganan. The material is said to have magical powers. The mystical character of the sacred linen is already clear from the name. Low Sing means " disease defensively ."
