Tengiz Abuladze

Tengiz Abuladze (Georgian თენგიზ აბულაძე; Russian Тенгиз Абуладзе; born January 31, 1924 in Kutaisi, † March 6, 1994 in Tbilisi ) was a Georgian film director. He was one of the first directors in the Soviet Union, which painted a critical picture of the real socialism and won due to the image force of his films many international awards.

Life

Abuladze studied 1943-1946 theater directing at the Shota Rustaveli Theatre Institute in Tbilisi. In 1952 he completed a directing course at the Moscow Film Institute ( WGIK ). In 1953 he began as a documentary filmmaker in the Georgian film studios Grusia movie.

1956 his first feature film was Magdanas donkey. It is about a Georgian family trying to come up with a blue donkey economically ends meet. He won the Palme d'Or for best short film of the Cannes Film Festival in 1956.
