Teófilo Chantre

Teofilo Chantre (born 1964 on the island of São Nicolau, Cape Verde ) is a Cape Verdean singer, songwriter and lyricist.

Life and work

Teofilo Chantre was born on the belonging to the Cape Verde island of São Nicolau. At age 13, he came with his family to France, where he lived for 25 years. Even as a teenager, he wrote his first song.

In 1993 he founded his band and released his first album. With Cesaria Evora and Tito Paris, he is one of the major music artists in the country. For Evora he wrote the lyrics to the song " Aussencia " which was the soundtrack of Emir Kusturica's film " Underground".

Chantre also sang along with Cesaria Evora and brought out an album of songs sung in French. His most important appearance in Europe he had in Paris at the legendary Olympia.

His music is mainly influenced by Cape Verdean ( Morna ), Brazilian, African and Cuban music.
