Teófilo Cubillas

Teófilo Cubillas (born 8 March 1949 in Puente de Piedra, Lima ) is a former Peruvian football player who in 1972 Torschützdenkönig the Copa Libertadores and was voted South America's Footballer of the Year. In March 2004 Cubillas was taken by Pele in the list of 125 greatest living footballers (FIFA 100). Cubillas coined the Peruvian football during the 1970s and was part of the reason that the Peruvian national football team qualified for three World Cup tournaments.

With the Football World Cup 1970 in Mexico Peru played with Germany in a preliminary round group and lost with 1:3. Peru qualified with victories over Bulgaria and Morocco, but for the quarterfinals. There, the future world champion Brazil was the enemy; Peru lost with 2:4. Cubillas scored in every game of this World Cup at least one goal and met a total of five times. In 2006 he was elected subsequently by Internet voting on the best young player of the tournament.

In the Copa America 1975 Peru Cubillas led to the championship, and so won his only international title. He scored in the 3-1 semi-final win over Brazil two goals and was voted player of the tournament.

Cubillas led his team as a midfielder and top scorer at the World Cup 1978 in Argentina again in the second final round. In the first game the team beat the favored Scots 3-1; Cubillas scored two goals. Towards the later runners-up Netherlands played Peru 0-0 in the second game. The qualification for the next round reached, the team then against Iran 4-1 after three hits of Cubillas. In the second final round, however, Poland and the eventual champion Argentina was against Brazil lost.

With the Football World Cup 1982 in Spain Cubillas had already passed its peak; a successor was not yet in sight. First they played against the novice Cameroon and eventual champions Italy in a draw, but a 1:5 defeat against Poland meant the early exit.

Cubillas ended his career in the mid -1980s in the American North American Soccer League. Peru could never show such success as to its active time.

He is, together with Miroslav Klose currently the only football player, who scored at least five goals in two World Championships.
