Terbium (III ) oxide is a chemical compound, more specifically, the oxide of terbium.
Occurrence
Terbium ( III ) oxide occurs naturally not. It occurs, however, bound to be highly complex silicate, for example, in Gadolinit.
Production and representation
Terbium ( III ) oxide can not be obtained directly from terbium and oxygen, since this brown terbium ( III, IV ) oxide Tb4O7 arises. Instead, it is prepared by controlled hydrogen reduction of the latter.
Properties
Physical Properties
As other heavy lanthanide is terbium (III ) oxide, two crystal structures are known. The normally stable structure is a cubic fluorite defective ( bixbyite ) structure with the lattice parameters a = 1072 pm. This also occurs in other lanthanide oxides. In addition, is still a monoclinic structure of the terbium (III ) oxide is known. This occurs during crystallization of terbium oxide / magnesium oxide melts.
Terbium ( III ) oxide, depending on the purity pure white to cream-colored. Luminescent glasses with additions of terbium ( III ) oxide.
Use
Pure terbium ( III ) oxide is hardly not used to do. As a starting material for the production of pure terbium terbium ( III, IV ) oxide is used Tb4O7.
