Tetracyclic antidepressant

Tetracyclic Antidepressants are psychiatric drugs that are used in the treatment of depressive disorders. They represent a further development of the tricyclic antidepressants, which they resemble structurally and pharmacologically. In their chemical structure, they do not have three, but four ( condensed ) carbon rings. Their effect is probably in the case of mianserin and mirtazapine on a blockade of presynaptic α2 - receptors and postsynaptic 5 - HT2 and 5 -HT3 receptors. A degree of inhibiting the reuptake of norepinephrine, especially from the synaptic cleft may play a role.
