Tetraphenylmethane was synthesized in the years 1896/1897 by chemist Moses Gomberg together with Adolf von Baeyer, Johannes Thiele and Victor Meyer for the first time. From tetraphenylmethane derived compounds are now used as material for OLEDs.

Structurally similar compounds are, for example, triphenylmethane and sodium tetraphenylborate.
