Tetrarogidae

Ablabys taenianotus

The end -finned fishes ( Tetrarogidae ( Gr. " tetra" = four, " ROGOS = wrinkled ) ) are an eleven genera and nearly 45 species of marine fish comprehensive family of the order Perciformes ( Perciformes ). They live in the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific. Tropical species live primarily in shallow water species from temperate areas of South Africa, Australia and Asia are more common in deep regions below 200 meters. Two types Notesthes robusta and Neovespicula depressifrons usually live in the brackish waters of estuaries in the Philippines, Indonesia, New Guinea and Australia and also penetrate into the fresh water of the rivers.

Features

End -finned fishes are 4 to 80 cm long and have moderately elongated, laterally strongly flattened body. Characteristic identifying the family is the dorsal fin that starts directly above the eyes. The head is prickly and wrinkled, the gill cover usually has two spines. The gill membranes are separated from the isthmus. End -finned can "walk" on their well-developed pectoral fins. They usually spend their time on the floor and let her body flattened by the waves rocking back and forth. So it looks like a leaf (leaf - mimicry ), are well camouflaged and potential prey does not see the predators. Their scales are tiny, thorn -like and are located deep in the skin. The animals are still poorly understood. Like the scorpion fish have the end -finned venomous fin rays.
