A broad overview of the Thai league system, in the wake of Thai football championship from 1916 to today.

Current System

Previous systems

Prior to founding the major league in Thailand, the Thai Premier League was in 1996, the Royal Cup was played the preamble of the bet in the petition to the Thai football championship.

1916-1962

In the same year in which the Thai Association was founded, the Association installed a championship. There the issue Yai Cup ( ถ้วย ใหญ่ ) and the Noi Cup ( ถ้วย น้อย )

1963-1995

Due to the increasing number of clubs in Thailand, the Association saw in 1963 forced to make a reform. So two more leagues were introduced and the two previous renamed. It was renamed the Yai Cup in Kor Royal Cup and the Cup Noi in Khǒr Royal Cup. Newly arrived the Khor Royal Cup and the Ngor Royal Cup.

1996-1999

In 1996, the Thai Premier League, introduced as the top division of the country. It replaced the previous Kor Royal Cup. This was henceforth be held only as between Supercup champion and runner. For the losers of the first TPL season, then the new second division, the Thailand Division 1 League was formed.

1999-2006

From 1999 to 2006 there were two seperrate football championships in Thailand. The Thai Sports Association, SAT, in 1999 founded his own league, the Thailand Provincial League. At your clubs from the provinces of Thailand took part almost exclusively. The champion of this league was not entitled to participate in the Thai Premier League until 2005. Only the participants in the Premier League were allowed to qualify for the Asian Kontinentalwettberbe.

2007-2008

For the 2007 season, the Provincial League was incorporated into the league system of FAT and hung below the first three leagues. 2009 Provincial League was dissolved and fully integrated into the restructured Second Division.
