That 1 Guy

Mike Silverman, better known as That 1 Guy, is an American musician and street artist from Berkeley, California. His trademarks include the Magic Pipe, a system developed by him and built, about two meters large instrument of galvanized metal tubes, tape, various small parts from the hardware store and two single strings. Another distinguishing feature is Silverman's partly bizarre lyrics.

Career

Silverman received classical training as a double bass player at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and later studied jazz bass at Los Medanos College and played in numerous jazz bands from the U.S. west coast as well as a session musician for Dewey Redman, Buddy Collette, Tom Waits and Karry Walker.

Unhappy with the possibilities of the double bass he developed, also out of frustration about the poor salaries of his band The Fabulous Hedgehogs the Magic Pipe and never played again since then publicly bass.

In 2000 they created the concept to That 1 Guy and in the same year Silverman drew his debut album Songs in the Key of Beotch, which was published in 2004 by Righteous Babe Records. Followed in 2007 the live DVD Live in the Land of Oz and the studio CD The Moon Is Disgusting.

In 2008 he toured repeatedly with the experimental guitarist Buckethead and published with him as Frankenstein Brothers Album bolt-on neck.

The Magic Pipe

Silverman's instrument consists mostly of commercial metal pipes together with suitable fittings, which are connected in harp- like form each other. About this construct two individual strings are stretched, which can be plucked or played with a bow. The instrument also has a number of sensors is provided, which are used to retrieve various percussion samples. Pedals and a snare drum complete the instrument.
