The Bachelor (Album)

The Bachelor ( German: The Bachelor ) is the fourth studio album by the British musician Patrick Wolf. After the break with his record label Loog in 2007, Patrick Wolf decided his next album, which should bear the title Battle to finance his fans who vorinvestierten on the Internet platform band Stocks for exclusive advance information and pre-emption rights on collector's editions in the production of the album. Finally, Battle, which was planned as a double album, was split into two parts: The Bachelor was released on 1 June 2009, the follower The Conqueror should follow in 2010. However, it was not published until mid-2011 under the title of Lupercalia, which refers to the Roman feast of Lupercalia.

Content design

Both The Bachelor and The Conqueror want to play biographical subjects of the artist, but are in sharp contrast to each other. This is due to the fact that Patrick Wolf began work on Battle in his own words in a phase when he was severely afflicted by lovesickness. The theme of loneliness is particularly clear in the title song of his expression ( " I will never marry, marry at all - no one wants to wear my silver ring "). The follow-up album The Conqueror, however, should consist mainly of songs that have arisen at a later stage, as Patrick Wolf was happy in love.

The narrating self, which certainly contributes biographical traces in many songs, often referred to as ' boy ' or ' son ' ( as in Vulture ), and is found on numerous adventurous wrong path through the work; this through thickets ( Thickets ) and through the maze of the Minotaur Theseus in the song. From these wrong turns out the young adventurer, the hero and rogue lead at the same time, however, several red threads to his " cursed and blessed " way ( " the cursed and blessed open road ," as it says in the final part of The Messenger ). One of them is the reckoning with his own father, as in the songs of Oblivion ( " father - where's my gun ?") And - particularly with a personal touch - in Blackdown, which deals with Patrick Wolf's family history.

Also, Patrick Wolf is explicit and offensive with his homosexuality apart, as he has done on previous albums, particularly in Battle ( " I am so sick of being told my identity is in minority ").
