The BFG

Sophiechen and the giant (orig. The BFG ) is a 1982 children's book, published in the British author Roald Dahl. The German edition was published in 1984. The illustrations are by Quentin Blake.

Action

It's midnight and the little orphan Sophiechen wakes up to find out what's happening in the witching hour.

From the window she sees a large black figure moves to the houses and a kind of trumpet is in the open window, with which he blows it something in the room. The black figure noticed Sophiechen and stretches his big hand into the room and kidnapped Sophiechen.

The next morning Sophiechen housed in a huge cave with huge shelves, jars, chairs and a large table. Then shows an eight -foot-tall giant with large protruding ears. He thinks Sophie that the giant would eat them, but the giant shows her to be very friendly. The giant is called the Gurie ( Good Giant) and it only has kidnapped because she had been watching him. Giants should not be seen because people could then hunt and kill.

Sophiechen tells him that he has kidnapped from an orphanage, and that she is happy about it. Thereupon the Gurie and Sophiechen become friends. But in the vast country there are still nine other giants who have no friendly intentions. You are fifteen feet tall, ugly and passionate man-eater. They move the world to pull in the nights people from their homes and then to eat. They despise the Gurie because he eats no people, friendly and not half so large as she.

The Gurie eats disgusting Kotzgurken and drinking bubbly, so that he can make funny Furzelbäume. The Gurie explains Sophie, that are in the jars dreams he had eingekäschert from the Dreamland and he draws at night in the cities, pour the dreams in the trumpet blows it into houses, and so brought the sleeping man sweet dreams.

Filming

The story of the book was filmed under the title The big friendly giant as an animated production. He was released in 1997 on VHS.

Radio play version

2002 WDR published a radio play in eight parts to this book. Narrator was peer Augustinski, Sophiechen was spoken by Verena Wurth and Gurie was portrayed by Michael Habeck. The play was published in 2005 brought the Hörverlag on CD.
