The Coasters

The Coasters were an R & B vocal group of the 1950s. They were founded in October 1955 in Los Angeles. Origin for the group was founded in 1949 Group Robins about her former lead singer Bobby Nunn. Early in 1954 came tenor Carl Gardner to the group.

Already in the spring of the same year, the famous producer team Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who had already in 1951 wrote the song " That's what the good book says" for the Robins, the quintet took and produced henceforth whose plates on his newly founded Spark label. What resulted were some classics like " Riot in Cell Block No. 9 " and" Smokey Joe 's Cafe " with the also for the later Coasters hits typical for that time but an absolute no- critical- humorous lyrics.

Nesuhi Ertegun of Atlantic Records was published in the August 1955 single " Smokey Joe 's Cafe 'attention. As Leiber / Stoller signed a production contract with Atlantic Records in September, the single was released on the Atco subsidiary label again what the group earned 10th place in the R & B charts and # 73 in the pop charts, their biggest success up to that point. Leiber and Stoller realized that this success would not have been possible with their small label, and so eventually all the material from Spark to Atlantic was sold.

This fact now raised the question whether the Robins would also change with the hit composer Atlantic, what finally broke the band. So Bobby Nunn and Carl Gardner went from the Robins with Leiber and Stoller to Atlantic Records and founded in October 1955 along with Leon Hughes, Billy Guy and Adolph Jacobs on guitar, the new band " The Coasters " in reference to the origin of the band of the American west coast. The rest of the Robins made - but without much success - with new band members until the early 60s on.

Leiber and Stoller were their producers since the founding of the Coasters and also wrote virtually every hit for the band; the Coasters developed into the most important vehicle for the compositions of the writing staff. Already in January 1956 they recorded their first songs, including their debut single "Down in Mexico" that made it also in the top 10 of the R & B charts. From 1957 it was raining then successes, through which the Coster Although celebrity, but not a great deal of money obtained: They got together only $ 5,000 per week. It was a period in which black singers still had to be satisfied with what they received. "Young Blood" and " Searchin ' ", both Leiber / Stoller songs were the biggest hits of the band this year and the first top - 10 finishes in the U.S. pop charts.

1958 Leiber and Stoller moved to New York. Guy and Gardner came up with, while the others remained in Los Angeles. As a replacement came Cornell Gunter and Will " Dub" Jones. With " Yakety Yak " ( March 1958 ) and " Charlie Brown" ( December 1958 ) published then the greatest successes of the Coasters. On both recordings King Curtis playing saxophone. The songs, both of Leiber and Stoller, characterized by humorous and rebellious, for those times texts. After " Along Came Jones " and "Poison Ivy " in 1959 and " Little Egypt ( Ying- Yang ) " 1961 was the heyday of the early 60s Coasters finally over.

In the 60s, Gunter and Jones got out, in Earl " Speedo " Carroll ( 1961) and Ronnie Bright was found replacement (1968). 1971 came with the cover version of " Love potion no. 9 ", a hit of the Clovers in 1959, again placing it in the U.S. pop charts. Shortly thereafter, Billy Guy left the band, with which he was, however, occurred only sporadically since 1963 in addition to recordings, and was replaced by Jimmy Norman.

Subsequently, the band toured as Oldie Group across the country. Since the 1970s and 1980s were and still are often several bands with the name Coasters, there were also named among other Gunter Guy and their new bands that way. In 1987, their inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. On this occasion, was the last time the original lineup Gardner, Guy, Jones and Gunter together.

Carl Gardner had held together with Ronnie Bright, the Coasters to the 2000s into it. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary band in October 2005, born in 1928, Gardner, however, withdrew as lead singer, he died in June 2011 as the last member of the original cast. As the new head of the Coasters Carl Gardner joined jun. in his father's footsteps.
