The Death Defying Unicorn ( Subtitle: A Fanciful and Fairly Far-Out Musical Fable ) is a double album by the Norwegian rock band Motorpsycho in cooperation with Ståle Storløkken. It appeared in 2012 at Rune Grammofon.
Creation and publication
Ståle Storløkken was commissioned for the fortieth Molde Jazz Festival with a work which he developed with Motorpsycho and 2010 aufführte with the band, a jazz band and a string ensemble. The following year, it was revised by Motorpsycho and Ståle Storløkken for a CD and LP release and provided with a concept. The double album was recorded in Oslo and Trondheim in 2011 with Ola Kvernberg, the TrondheimSolistene and the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra. It appeared in 2012 under the title The Death Defying Unicorn - A Fanciful and Fairly Far-Out Musical Fable.

Style
The concept album tells the story of a psychedelic - metaphysical shipwrecked. Motorpsycho and Ståle Storløkken play varied rock music with diverse influences from psychedelic rock, progressive rock, alternative rock, hard rock, rock, opera, jazz and new music. The compositions range between " peace and escalation, [ ... ] gentle melodies and exuberant chaos."
Reception
The press responded positively to the album. Jens Bauszus by Focus Online called The Death Defying Unicorn as the " wahnwitzigste rock opera of all time ," Michael Rensen of Rock Hard as the " most demanding musical highlight of the year ." On the Baby Blue Pages album is called " musical [r ] Big Bang ", it was " independent and expression of an individual art will." The eclipsed magazine took The Death Defying Unicorn on its list of the 150 most important prog albums and chose it as the album of 2012.
