The Gathering Wilderness is the fifth studio album by the pagan metal band Primordial; it was published in 2005. It was the first album for Metal Blade Records after their departure from Hammerheart Records.

Background

The album was recorded in October 2004 in the Cauldron studios in Dublin and mixed by Billy Anderson ( additional: Kevin Byrne ) and Ciaran Byrne mastered. The inspiration for the album title comes from the song Last Year 's Man, which is on the album Songs of Love and Hate by Leonard Cohen and which states: " ... that the wilderness is gathering ... ".

Reception

The reviews for The Gathering Wilderness were consistently excellent, both professional media such as Allmusic or Rock Hard, as well as various online magazines.

Zingultus of sleet called The Gathering Wilderness as " a lot more intense and noticeable " than most of today's black metal albums; Black Metal had " a very specific atmosphere convey " what " hardly anyone today " and create more of phonograms from other currents such as Primordial The Gathering Wilderness and My Dying Brides Turn Loose the Swans would be reached.

Especially the song The Coffin Ships, which deals with the Great Famine in Ireland, evolved over time into one of the most famous songs of the band and reached number 175 of the 250 best hard rock and metal songs of all time in the May 2011 issue rock Hard magazine.
