O Herói (English: The Hero ) is an Angolan- Portuguese- French Fim of the Angolan director Zezé Gamboa from the year 2004.

Action

Vitório, a veteran of the Angolan Civil War, has lost a leg by a land mine. Discharged from the army in Angola, he tries to survive in the streets of Luanda, and to integrate into civil society. He is fighting for his dignity and his survival in the grueling daily routine of the metropolis. He meets various women that give him hope, and of which one begins to develop with him a future perspective.

Reception

The film was a sign of the onset of overcoming the national trauma of decades of civil war, but especially a first clear sign of the start of the Angolan film. He convinced critics and audiences with his realistic, while human, and given the problem surprisingly lightweight representation.

O Herói won several awards, including the 2005 Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.
