The Kingdom of this World

The kingdom of this world ( original Spanish title: El reino de este mundo ) is the second novel by the Cuban- French writer Alejo Carpentier. It is one of the most important works of magical realism in the Caribbean and South American literature.

The original Spanish edition was published in 1949 under the title El reino de este mundo. The German edition appeared in 1964 in the Insel Verlag, Frankfurt.

Action

The book tells the history of the slave Ti Noel in the period before, during and after the Haitian Revolution. The slaves fight, led by Macandal, a black man who can take the shape of different animals, for their freedom; the reason the whites they oppose their faith in miracles and magic.
