The Klingon Dictionary

The Klingon Dictionary ( The Klingon Dictionary ) is a book by Marc Okrand, which describes the Klingon language developed by him and explains their grammar. It was first published in 1985 and 1992 further supplemented with an extension of 20 pages to 192 pages. It is the only official book on the subject and is therefore regarded as a standard work. Both editions were sold together approximately 300,000 times worldwide.

It forms the basic reading to learn the language, and is still used by TV producers to form Klingon dialogue. According to skip it is Okrands verbreitetstes work and is held above 300 libraries.

The work is formulated as a pure description of the grammar, with a few examples to every rule. It is only suitable for learning the language, because no exercises are included. The book was never intended as a textbook, but should serve the writers and actors as a reference. The dictionary has only been published as merchandising.

As the successor applies the book published in 1997 " Klingon for the Galactic Traveler" (German title Klingon advanced). This includes about 800 new words, including detailed information on the use of language, especially considering the ( fictional) cultural background. In contrast to the dictionary this sequel is written in plain text and does not describe grammar rules. Through its focus on the Klingon culture, and the resulting linguistic variations such as dialects and colloquial language, the language in this sequel is given more substance.

Content

The dictionary was written from the perspective of the fictional Star Trek universe, ie formulated so as there would be the Klingons really. After a short introduction, followed by notes on pronunciation, is the largest part of the description of the Klingon grammar. Afterwards, the dictionary - section is a total of approximately 1,500 words, followed by a list of useful sentences. In the expanded 1992 edition are in the appendix further grammatical details and a list of about 200 additional vocabulary that in later films and the series Star Trek: The Next Generation were included or were created for it.

2009 was published by Simon & Schuster dictionary in the form of an application for the iPhone as part of the three-part Klingon Language Suite. In this digital version pronounciation hints, instructions on use of prefixes and suffixes, as well as a search function are included.

Translations

The German translation appeared in 1996 at the Heel Verlag, entitled "The Official Dictionary Klingon / German " with 192 pages. This contains a lot of translation errors and typos and editorial errors The book is out of print, but a revised version from Klingonischexperten Lieven Litaer is available since April 29, 2013.

An Italian translation was published in 1998 in the Roman Fanucci Editore publishing house as " Il dizionario Klingon Italiano " with 256 pages. The book is out.

With the title " Klingonský Dictionary " the book in 2008 was translated into Czech. This translation is slightly smaller in size and therefore contains 280 pages.
